Chicago, IL — Inspired by the ground-breaking work of the Center on Wrongful Convictions at the Northwestern University School of Law, The Agency Theater Collective presents the world premiere of At the Center, adapted from hundreds of hours of interviews with exonerees, innocence lawyers, and crime victims.

Written, adapted, and directed by Artistic Director Andrew Gallant and Company Member Tim Touhy At the Center asks how we move forward after an injustice.

“There are great artistic works exploring wrongful convictions. However, few examine the injustice from the perspective of the wrongfully accused and the original crime victim,” said Andrew Gallant, artistic director of The Agency Theater Collective. “At The Center delves into the painful reality of life after an exoneration for the wrongfully accused and for the original victim.”

The production previews September 23 – September 25, and opens on Friday, September 26 at 7:30pm at Chicago Dramatists Theatre (1105 W. Chicago Ave). At the Center runs until November 2.

“Although fiction, At the Center is a stunning reflection of reality – especially in its depiction of a false confession and the anguish a crime victim suffers when she realizes that her innocent mistake sent a man to prison for a crime he didn’t commit.” said Rob Warden, Executive Director Emeritus of the Center on Wrongful Convictions.

ABOUT THE PLAY

Pictured: Elizabeth Harvey (Sommer Austin) and her daughter Rebecca Harvey (Nicole Magerko).

Elizabeth Harvey has spent 19 years putting the pieces of her life back together following a brutal sexual assault. Hector Reyes has spent 19 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. When innocence lawyers intervene on Hector’s behalf, the painful truth about their shared story begins to emerge. Inspired by the work of the Center on Wrongful Convictions at the Northwestern University School of Law, At the Center explores the issues surrounding wrongful convictions and asks how we can move forward after a miscarriage of justice.
